06 Mar 3/2019 – Establishment of the “Design, Interior Architecture and Audiovisual Documentation” research laboratory by the decision of the Governing Committee of the University of Western Attica
The “Design, Interior Architecture and Audiovisual Documentation” research laboratory was founded by the decision of the Governing Committee of the University of Western Attica (session number 3/05-02-2019, which was published in number 8039 /6- 3-2019 Gazette.
Specifically, according to article 1 of its regulation, “The Laboratory entitled “Design, Interior Architecture and Audiovisual Documentation – DesArDo lab” is established at the School of Applied Arts and Culture of the University of Western Attica. (Design, Interior Architecture and Audiovisual Documentation Laboratory), which serves the educational and research needs in the interdisciplinary approach of the knowledge objects of design, visual communication, interior architecture and their digital documentation as a broad unified subject of theory and practice, in relation to the corresponding academic subjects of the undergraduate study program of the Departments of Interior Architecture, Graphic Design and Visual Communication, and Photography and Audiovisual Arts, of the Master’s Program of Studies of the Department of Interior Architecture of Interiors: Sustainable and Social Design., as well as the possible of future Master’s Programs and doctoral theses in progress, which fall within the research fields of the laboratory.
The research work of the laboratory is specialized in the following research fields:

- in the creative dimension of design (design creativity), in the dimension of space and the form it takes through human actions over time, as well as in the ways of audiovisual recording, representation, digital presentation and communication.
- in the study, recording, documentation of all kinds of newer architectural monuments, whose interior space is a legacy of the cultural past, dealing with the issues of their rescue and inclusion in the modern era as cultural heritage but also as living spaces, the assessment of their contribution in shaping aesthetics, as well as their connection with the concept of sustainable development both as a local characteristic and as a construction logic. In the study of their relations with the closest social and cultural environment with an emphasis on the field of development of quality cultural tourism, with extensions such as defining intervention criteria and development methods and highlighting the interior architectural spaces and the elements that make them up as key resources for sustainable development.
- in the processing of forms of visual communication in traditional and modern environments, with the aim of recording and creating an audiovisual database for the production of research, information and educational material, which will support the promotion and study of the spaces and the actions carried out in them.
- in the investigation of the relationship of the material space with the digital space and its increased possibility in the design of interfaces of everyday objects of use.
- in the use of new media in visual and digital applications.
- in the use of visual practices and visual design for spatial study and research, for the formation of social and dialogic space in the public sphere.
- in the development of theoretical approaches and modern technological tools to achieve the aforementioned goals.
- in the development of advanced teaching methods for the teaching of the previously mentioned fields at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
