Subject: The development of curatorial strategy in contemporary Greek photography
Over the last decades, the presence of photography in Greece has been established both domestically and internationally, with numerous exhibitions and activities that are often reflected in printed material, being accompanied by epistemological studies. The aim of this proposed PhD thesis is to investigate and document the exhibiting process of photographic works in Greece and abroad. Curatorial practice in contemporary Greek photography has significantly contributed to the three-part dialogue between artists, audiences and projects. The proposed PhD thesis focuses on the recording and highlighting of curatorial practices in photography exhibitions during the time period from ‘70s to the present.
The exploration of variety that surrounds the organization and presentation of important photographic exhibitions will both establish the position of photography among other media representing art in Greece, and contribute to the documentation of history of Greek photography through the prism of large-scale presentations.
By highlighting the role of the curator over the last decades, documenting important curatorial practices of photography exhibitions held in the premises of prestigious cultural institutions, and studying exhibitions that highlight handling, documentation and presentation of photographic archives, this research aims to point the critical influence of curatorial practice on contemporary Greek photographic production, both domestically and internationally.
The study of curatorial strategies can contribute to a thorough historical recording of Greek photography and contribute to a deeper understanding of history by highlighting the dialogue and connections between works and artists.
