Vasileios Kantas researches the photographic image. Having studied Electrical Engineering (BSc), Photography (BA, PhD), Critical Theory (MA), Philosophy & Arts (MA), Teaching Art & Design in H.E.(PgCert), being a scholarship holder of the I.K.Y. and of the A.H.R.C., he holds a PhD -Wimbledon College of Art- in the field of Philosophy of the photographic medium.
His research interests include the reception of the photographic image, experimental methods of taking photographs through condition adoption, the philosophy of the implicit and embodied apprehension.
He has contributed his thoughts on the medium in articles and conferences. More recently, he has collaborated as a co editor in the research manual “Handbook of Research on the Relationship Between Autobiographical Memory and Photography” (2023, IGI Global) and co author in “Critical and creative thinking in the teaching of the religious education module” (2024, Kallipos digital repository).
Since 2010, he has been teaching Photography modules (University of the Aegean, Ionian University, University of Athens, London South Bank University, London College of Communication). He is an academic scholar of the Department of Photography & Audiovisual Arts at UniWA in the field of Critical Theory & Art Photography. He designed and teaches since 2017 the distance learning program “Photography: Theoretical Approaches and Personal Style” at UoA.
He facilitates photographers in the design and development of their photography projects. He receives ongoing training in creative practice methods from different fields (therapeutic arts, physical theater, person-centered psychotherapy, creative writing, qualitative research on experience, etc.) using them to design experimental photography methods of shooting. The Syn-photo presentation of his teaching tactics at the “2nd International Therapeutic Photography Symposium 2024” encapsulates his current thinking in the field of photographic practice as personal expression – to which he was led rather organically, due to his in depth and dedicated attitude towards photographic practice.
He has been exhibiting his images since 2001, part of which can be met in collections such as that of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts. He uses the instagram profile vassilisfoto both as a sketchbook and as a way to receive feedback from its onlookers, to his visualized responses to selected occurrences of what he encounters in his daily life.
